Giving People Control Over Their Time and What They See on Instagram

Giving People Control Over Their Time And What They See On Instagram

We are introducing 'Quiet Mode' on Instagram, designed to assist users in concentrating when they need it the most, and encouraging teenagers to enable this feature. We're providing additional methods for users to indicate the types of content they prefer not to encounter in sections like Explore, Search, and Reels. Furthermore, we are enhancing our parental supervision tools to simplify the process for parents to discuss Instagram settings with their teens.

Assisting You in Concentrating and Establishing Limits with Quiet Mode

Today, we are introducing 'Quiet Mode' to aid individuals in concentrating and promoting the establishment of boundaries with friends and followers. When activated, notifications will be silenced, your profile's activity status will display 'In Quiet Mode,' and an automatic reply will be sent to anyone who sends you a direct message.

Teenagers have expressed a desire for more ways to concentrate at night, during study sessions, and while at school. 'Quiet Mode' can be easily tailored to your schedule, and when the feature is deactivated, we'll present a brief summary of notifications so you can catch up on what you missed. While anyone can use 'Quiet Mode,' we will encourage teens to enable it when they spend a certain amount of time on Instagram late at night.

'Quiet Mode' is now available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans to expand to more countries in the near future.

Innovative Methods to Control Your Content Suggestions

Our aim is to provide users with greater control over the content displayed on Instagram, so we are launching new features that enable users to indicate the content they prefer not to be recommended.

Firstly, you can now opt to conceal multiple items in Explore that do not pique your interest simultaneously. Furthermore, when you select "Not interested" on a post within Explore, we will strive to prevent displaying similar content in other areas where we offer recommendations, such as Reels, Search, and more.

New Ways To Manage Your Recommendations

Furthermore, although you can currently hide comments and direct messages containing specific words, we are extending this feature to encompass recommended posts you may encounter throughout Instagram. Add a word or a set of words, emojis, or hashtags that you want to avoid – such as "fitness" or "recipes" – and we will endeavor to cease recommending content containing those words in the caption or hashtag. You can find this feature in the Suggested Content section of Settings.

Enhancing Teen Experiences with Upgraded Parental Monitoring Tools

Alongside offering teens additional ways to manage their time and experiences on Instagram, we aim to support parents in staying informed about their teens' choices and facilitate discussions about their settings via Family Center and supervision tools.

We recently enabled parents to view their teen's Instagram settings, encompassing privacy and account settings. If a teen modifies a setting, parents will be notified, allowing them to initiate a conversation about the change. Parents can now also see the accounts their teen has blocked.

To access conversation prompts and learn more about available parental supervision tools, including setting time restrictions, scheduling breaks, receiving notifications when teens share a report, and more, visit the Family Center.

These updates are part of our continuous efforts to ensure that users have personalized experiences, greater control over their time spent online, and the ability to manage the types of content they encounter.
